Din Tai Fung

I'm sure Din Tai Fung is a familiar name that will ring a bell in most people's minds, especially Sydney dumpling-lovers and fellow foodies. Situated in three prominent locations - World Square, The Star & Westfield Pitt St Mall - this place is acclaimed for its Xiao Long Baos (Steamed Dumplings) and attracts lines like no other.

From Dumplings to Wontons to Noodles and Hot Desserts..the menu does seem to have quite alot of choices to choose from.

Each table has some bottles of Vinegar, Soy Sauce, Pepper...etc for diners to use as sauces for the dumplings.

For drinks, I ordered a Soy Bean Milk ($3) which was nice and chilled whilst M got the Sweet Tea ($3.80) which tasted rather odd...

I was disappointed with the Braised Beef Noodle Soup ($16.80) as the broth base was not what I had envisioned it to be. Although very light, the soup had a strong Chinese-spices-like taste which didn't go down well with me at all. It would've been good if the beef was more tender as well...

M on the other hand loved it! He enjoyed the strong beef scents from the soup and the bouncy noodles however he also wasn't a fan of the beef cubes itself.

The Crab Meat & Roe with Pork Dumpling ($19.80 for 8pcs) was unfortunately another disappointment for me. Despite the generous servings of crab meat inside the delicate shell, the taste did not match my expectations. It wasn't tasty enough and the after taste was a tad bit strange...

To be honest, I've had much better for half the price and so I probably wouldn't come back for these. Maybe if I had stuck with original Pork Dumplings, it would've been better?

There were quite a few additional dishes on a separate menu and so we decided to give the Crispy Fried Chicken with Chilli ($15.80) a go. It was dangerously spicy and hot with a super crunch. A lovely bite size treat that will have you going crazy for water afterwards as the strong hints of chilli tends to linger longer than you think...

Overall, Din Tai Fung is not exactly my go-to place for Chinese food or dumplings though I do acknowledge it's popularity with the majority of the Sydney dining scene. Despite so many positive reviews of the place, personally it's just not my cup of tea and I feel that it is a bit too expensive.

On the other hand, service here is speedy fast and for the ladies, you get a handbag holder/chair next to you which I thought was really considerate. Din Tai Fung definitely attracts crazy crowds and so be prepared to line up for a bit if you come during peak hour time.
